The Long Becoming: Artist tours on the hour or by appointment @ Killoskehane Castle
Spend an hour with the artist while enjoying the newly remodeled castle. On Friday 27 November, E Alana James leads small-group tours of The Long Becoming, her exhibition of life-story portraits at Killoskehane Castle, Co. Tipperary. Tours start on the hour from 10am, and the last one starts at 3pm. Private times can be arranged by appointment. Each portrait begins with a conversation. Older people, many in their 80s and 90s, have shared the stories of their long lives. Alana combines their photographs with historical imagery and expressive colour in digital collage. Before any image becomes part of a portrait, she checks it back with the person it belongs to. The tour follows the route through two floors of the castle, decorated for Christmas: • The chapel: earlier and current versions of the same portraits show how the work has developed over the year • The lounge and bedrooms: individual lives, each placed in a room that suits it • The drawing room: the largest group of the newest framed portraits • The dining room: photographs from the 1930s–1970s to handle and rearrange into your own story • The kitchen: Nora's story of farming life near Cork, family and resilience There's time for questions throughout: how the portraits are made, what older people reveal about resilience, and how a life becomes an image.
