A whistle-stop tour of the county, architecturally speaking, with an emphasis on our vernacular buildings. The presentation will also include ways in which our built heritage can be better understood and nurtured. Since studying archaeology and folklore/folklife many years ago, Barry has been engaged in research, writing and speaking on the subject of our built (especially vernacular) heritage, both in Ireland and abroad, to local groups, third-level courses and international conferences. He has two modest books, Ballyknockan: a Wicklow stone-cutters village and Living under Thatch to his name, but numerous articles in journals and other publications. He is also editor for Europe of the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World. He has been based at the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage for the last twenty years and is responsible for the national strategy for built vernacular heritage, A Living Tradition. He is also a student of corrugated iron, vernacular settlements/hamlets, and the vernacular landscape.
