“An Examined Life” or “A Selfie” is the title of an exhibition of self-portraits by artist Pauline Goggin, which will be on display in the exhibition room at Nenagh Library through the month of December. These selected works span the years of her art practice, from the early 1980s to 2023. In the course of moving to Nenagh a year ago, Pauline found time to unpack some of the art that had been in storage and out of mind and sight for several years. On realising how many self-portraits there were, the following questions occurred to her: Why so many? Were they meant to be a document of record for the younger artist? A testimony to appearance or experience? A declaration of a kind? A slower kind of "selfie"? or perhaps all of the above? You are invited to come and judge for yourself, and perhaps further questions may emerge for you. There will also be an opportunity to see an object inspired by the recent series in November, where 14 participants contributed words of remembrance in response to Pauline’s presentation on post-funeral customs and rituals around the world and her own response to personal bereavement.
