Dorje de Burg - Under the Same Sky
19th May – 24th June 2023 Dorje de Burg Under the Same Sky Centred upon the photographic documentation of Carrick-on-Suir and its surrounds throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and that moment’s particular atmosphere of trauma and inertia, Under the Same Sky seeks to map a personal conception of home, belonging, community and alienation within a context of ever-increasing transience, precarity and social atomisation. This work also strives to subvert familiar representations of the Irish landscape, and in doing so reflect the tensions of temporality and topography inherent in both the liminal urban-rural space and the artist’s own conflicting positions of proximity and psychological distance. Built upon the ruthless excavation of autobiographical experience and family history, Dorje de Burgh’s practice uses photography, the archive, language, and film to explore libidinal excess, lack, and the paradoxes of (image) desire in an increasingly schizoid present. Dorje de Burgh lives and works between Killarney, Dublin & Berlin. Following nomination as a member of the FUTURES European mentorship program, Dorje received the Arts Council of Ireland Next Generation award 2020 and The Darkroom moving image residency 2020/21, producing his second solo exhibition How To Kill Something That Doesn’t Exist in association with PhotoIreland Festival 2021. Two key works from this show were subsequently purchased by the Arts Council of Ireland for their collection. Additionally, a selection of images from his previous large-scale work Dream the End have been included in the Gallery of Photography’s comprehensive historical survey of Irish photography, In Our Own Image: Photography in Ireland, 1839 to the Present - scheduled for exhibition and publication throughout 2022. What Are The Roots That Clutch, his first artist’s monograph, was published by PhotoIreland in January 2022.
